Overview of this page...

filicio.us is a simple file storage service built using Amazon S3. You can use it to upload files, organize using tags and share with others. The site was designed and developed by Steffen Christensen with help from Guan Yang.

Storing files with filicio.us

Service Price
Uploading files, per GB $0.50
Storing files, per GB per month $0.20
Downloading files, per GB $0.25
Filicio.us' prices

Filicio.us is the most cost effective option for backing up files, for storing them and for sharing them with others. When you sign up you'll receive $0.15 into you account. This may not sound like much, but it's enough to let you upload and store 60MB for free for a year for free.

The great thing about these prices is the flexibility: You won't need to choose between different fixed-price plans and you'll only pay for what you actually use.

It's also cheap: for example, for only under $30 you can upload and store 5GB for 2 years and then download it again! And, for $10 you can upload and store a 100MB backup for 497 months. That's more than 41 years!

Using an Amazon S3 account

Files uploaded to filicio.us are stored at Amazon S3. This means that they'll always be hosted in a secure environment. When you sign up you can choose whether you'll use your own Amazon account to store your files, or if you want to pay filicio.us directly. Basically, the first option is a bit cheaper and a lot harder to set up. So if you're in doubt, just choose the easy way...

To use filicio.us with an Amazon.com account you must be signed up for S3. Amazon will charge you $0.20 per GB you transfer (upload or download) and $0.15 per GB per month for storage. (You can compare that with filicio.us' prices above.)

When you sign up with filicio.us, you will be asked for your Amazon Web Services Access Key and Secret Key. We will use your access key once to create a bucket in your Amazon account and give us permission to upload and modify files in it. We will not store your access key and will not use it again. We will not be able to access any other buckets in your account.

You will be charged by Amazon for the traffic generated when you upload and download files through filicio.us because the bucket still belongs to your account.

With our current Flash uploader, your files still pass through our servers on their way to Amazon since uploading directly to Amazon is difficult to implement due to security restrictions in browsers. We are working on a solution that enables you to upload to Amazon directly.

Public files

When you upload public files to filicio.us and set them to Public (all public files are marked with a green icon left of the file name), those files are made available to anyone through http://filicio.us/your-username. This means that you can easily share files with the world. For example, you can upload the recipe of you favorite chicken dish, tag it superchicken, and direct your friends directly to filicio.us to download it.

Get a demonstration

Signing up for filicio.us requires signing up for a Amazon S3 account — but if you want to try it out before getting a real account, just log in with the username demo and the password demo.

Please note: We'll be paying for file transfers from the demo account, so please don't upload large files just for the sake of it. Feel free to try it out but do so within reason. Also, note that all files you upload will be made available to all other demo users (even if they're set to private), and that the files you upload to the demo account will eventually be deleted!

Still to come...

We're planning to add a few more features in the coming days, weeks, and months. The list is being maintained right here. Also, add comment a comment if you have suggestions...
